Synopsis
Loving Chris Henderson would be
wrong. Diabolically disastrous. I mean, what is there about him to love? He’s
moody, bossy, brooding, a control freak, and that’s on a good day … but there
was one achingly obvious fact that haunted my every thought, every minute of
every day …
He sure could kiss.
As the countdown to the new millennium begins, there is one thing everyone
agrees on: no one wants to be in Onslow for New Year’s Eve.
So that can only mean one thing: road trip!
No longer the mousey, invisible, shy girl from years ago, Tammy Maskala is
finally making up for all those lost summers. A new year with new friends,
which astoundingly includes the bossy boy behind the bar, Chris Henderson.
She likes her new friends (at least most of them), so why does she secretly
feel so out of place?
After chickening out on the trip, a last-minute change of heart sees Tammy
racing to the Onslow Hotel, fearing she’s missed her chance for a ride. The
last thing she expected to meet was a less-than-happy Onslow Boy leaning
against his black panel van.
Now the countdown begins to reach the others at Point Shank before the party is
over and the new year has begun. Alone in a car with only the infuriating Chris
Henderson, Tammy can’t help but feel this is a disastrous start to what could
have been a great adventure. But when the awkward road trip takes an unexpected
turn, Tammy soon discovers that the way her traitorous heart feels about Chris
is the biggest disaster of all.
Fogged up windows, moonlight swimming, bad karaoke and unearthed secrets; after
this one summer nothing will ever be the same again.

My Review
5 out of 5 !!!
A hilarious, enticing
love story that had me captivated from the very first sentence! I started
reading TOS at midnight, so imagine my surprise when C.J started off the story
in a setting of pitch blackness. I
was definitely worried about having nightmares especially when this sentence
popped up “One, two, Freddie’s coming for you… Three, four, better lock your
door.” Yep visions of Freddie Kruger popped into my mind at that point. But
anyway, what I found the most enjoyable about this novel was that it kept
getting better and intriguing throughout each chapter, until I had no choice but to be a
hundred percent captivated and in love with everything Duggan threw at us.
The story starts off
with the Onslow gang not wanting to spend the New Year’s in town as the
welcoming of a new millennia. So the
girls invite themselves to go with the boys camping at Point Shank. But our
main girl Tammy’s not so sure if she wants to go. What with feeling like she
doesn’t belong in the group. But when she changes her mind at the last minute,
she heads to the Onslow Hotel in a rush with her mum driving like crazy (which
is normal apparently) and there she finds…. That they left without her. But
little did she know that someone’s been there waiting for her… Mr Chris
Henderson himself, blackmailed by his
little cuz into taking Miss Maskala to catch up with the gang. And in turn
starts a hilarious, swoon-worthy romantic, outrageous road trip to the perfect
NYE destination with a group of friends like no other. And when the clock strikes
twelve, be prepared for an unexpected surprise, you’ll never see coming ;-].
Tammy Maskala’s this
beautiful, sometimes shy, sometimes confident, college personal trainer, who feels
as if she doesn’t belong with the Onslow gang and so she distances herself… or
at least she tries to distance herself. But with best friend Amy’s
interference, she has no choice but to get involved and have fun with a group
of people who enjoy her company. And with moody Chris showing more emotions
towards her than anybody else, she’s about to be bombarded with friends trying
to pair her up with a hottie (which isn’t that bad if you ask me ;-]).
“ But if I had to
choose perfect, I would have just chosen you” – Chris
In the other Summer
novel, I felt like we barely got a good idea as to who exactly is Chris
Henderson, so I was super excited to find out he was getting his own novel. Now
if you suddenly forgot who Chris is for some reason or that you were overloaded
with too many Onslow hotties and totally spaced as to who was who. Well, Chris
is the moody bartender who now runs Onslow along with Sean. The hottie with a
scowl who I feel always had a helping hand in whatever problems arised within the
gang. Chris kind of took me by surprise, I always enjoyed his scenes in the
previous books, but I’ve always seen him as this cool, collected bartender and
in TOS we see a whole new side to him that I just adore. He's usually
anti-social towards the girls, but with Tammy, we see a whole new side to him… a
yummy side ;-P. He's cheeky, devious and charming and he seems to be giving out
those rare sunshine smiles to only one girl. But his also sweet in a quiet, comforting way
and add in the fact his a dedicatedly responsible guy with a tempting bod... and we have
the perfect guy!
“Watching Chris’s body
slowly appear out of the water. It was as if a movie was playing out in slow
motion before my eyes – he ran his hands back through his hair as the excess
water dribbled down his tanned skin.”
As always, I love the
Aussie references in the series, it was definitely a breath of fresh air and
just made me so at home with the setting as it’s similar to my own lifestyle. It
was also amazing to see the gang all together once again! As unlike the first
two novels, I feel like in TOS we got to know the other characters (mainly the
rest of the Onslow boys) on a deeper level as they are seen all out together
crackin’ up jokes and just having a good time. It also added to the atmosphere
of summer, to get to see their unique bonds and how comfortable they all are individually or together, even
though Tammy feels like she’s out of place, we get to see her interaction with
the others and how they value her as one of their own. It was also great to see
the dynamics of Tammy and Amy’s friendship, it reminds me of my conversations
with my girls every time we hang out together. And oh C.J! You still manage to
have me cracking up like a hyena at all your comedic situations and expressions!
I also love the
unexpected twists Duggan throws our way, they definitely keep things in
suspense and makes it that much more interesting, while making it a far cry
from knowing what to expect. Also, every Chris and Tammy moments had me smiling
like a lunatic. And as much as I love the Onslow Hotel, it was nice to see the
gang on a road trip and have some new scenery. After reading book two, I feel
like it was a nice change of direction as the follow up. As An Endless Summer mostly concentrated on
the Onslow hotel, it was nice, to take a break and have a whole new scenery and
adventures for book three.
Overall, That One Summer is a
hilarious, captivating and an enticing read full of friendship, romance, and
hilarious adventures that will keep you enchanted even after you’ve finished reading.
Worth a read, especially if you’ve read the first two novels. Also it’s a
perfect summer read in the countdown for the New Year! Definitely gets you
thinking about what your plans are for NYE 2014.
